Video laryngoscopy is a diagnostic tool that uses a small, high-definition camera on a flexible or rigid scope to visualize the vocal cords and upper airway. This precise technology captures detailed video footage in real time, enabling both doctor and patient to better understand the condition at hand.
It’s often used for evaluating voice changes, persistent throat discomfort, swallowing difficulty, and airway obstruction. It also plays a crucial role in post-operative follow-up and vocal cord therapy monitoring.
Types of Video Laryngoscopy
Video laryngoscopy is typically performed right in our office. You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a short period beforehand. A local anesthetic, such as a numbing spray, is often used to ensure comfort.
Your ENT specialist will gently insert the scope through the nose or mouth while a video monitor displays a clear, real-time view of your vocal cords and throat. The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes and involves little to no discomfort. Most patients return to regular activities immediately afterward. Some may notice mild throat irritation, which generally fades within a few hours.
Video laryngoscopy is highly effective in diagnosing a variety of voice, throat, and airway conditions, including:

Video laryngoscopy offers a fast, clear, and non-invasive method to evaluate the structures involved in speech and swallowing. Its high-definition imaging allows our specialists to detect subtle issues that may be missed by traditional methods.
Because it provides real-time visualization, treatment plans can often begin immediately after the procedure. Whether you're dealing with unexplained voice changes or recovering from surgery, video laryngoscopy offers the clarity needed to guide the next step in your care.

After your procedure, your ENT provider will review the video footage with you, explaining what was observed and discussing possible causes of your symptoms. Depending on the findings, next steps may include lifestyle adjustments like voice rest or diet changes, medications to treat infection or reflux, personalized vocal therapy, or other treatments.
In some cases, additional imaging or biopsy may be recommended. Whatever your diagnosis, you’ll leave with a clear understanding of your condition and a plan to help restore your throat and vocal health.
