When Sounds Begin to Fade

What is hearing loss?

Hearing loss can occur suddenly or develop gradually over time, affecting how you perceive sounds and interact with those around you. It’s a common health concern—especially with age—impacting nearly one in three adults between the ages of 65 and 74, and about half of those over 75.

When hearing begins to fade, simple moments like following a conversation, hearing the phone ring, or responding to an alarm can become difficult. Untreated hearing loss can also affect balance and coordination, as the inner ear helps regulate spatial awareness. Over time, these challenges may lead to frustration, isolation, or decreased quality of life.

Common causes include long-term noise exposure, age-related changes, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to maintaining clear communication, safety, and confidence in daily living.

A Quick, Effective Assessment for Everyday Hearing Health

Diagnosing Hearing Loss

[.lead]At SoCal ENT, our audiologists perform detailed audiometric testing to measure how well you hear across a range of tones and speech levels. Using the latest diagnostic technology, we assess your hearing with accuracy and attention to comfort. If hearing loss is identified, our team offers a full range of solutions—from advanced digital hearing aids to medical management and preventive care—based on your specific needs.

Standard Hearing Test

A standard hearing test evaluates how well you detect sounds across the full range of speech frequencies (250–8000 Hz). The process begins with a brief examination of the ear canal and eardrum to ensure they’re healthy and clear of obstruction. Using either insert earphones or over-the-ear headphones, your audiologist will play tones at various pitches and volumes to measure the quietest sounds you can hear in each ear.

The assessment takes about 15 minutes and provides valuable insight into your overall hearing ability, forming the foundation for further evaluation or treatment if needed.

Comprehensive Hearing Test

A comprehensive hearing test offers a complete evaluation of your hearing and ear function, performed by an audiologist or ENT specialist. The assessment begins with a standard air-conduction hearing test, which measures how well you detect tones across key speech frequencies (250–8000 Hz).

To gain a deeper understanding of your hearing health, a bone-conduction test is also performed. This portion transmits sound through gentle vibration to evaluate the performance of the middle and inner ear, helping determine where any hearing loss originates.

Speech testing further measures how clearly you understand spoken words in different listening environments, providing insight into your real-world hearing ability. Together, these tests give our specialists a detailed picture of your auditory system and guide personalized recommendations for maintaining or improving your hearing health.

Tympanogram

A tympanogram measures how the eardrum moves in response to small changes in air pressure inside the ear canal. This test helps evaluate middle ear function and how effectively sound is transmitted from the eardrum to the inner ear.

By tracking the eardrum’s movement, tympanometry can detect issues, such as excess earwax (cerumen), middle ear infections (otitis media), or a perforated eardrum, all of which can interfere with hearing. Typically performed along with a standard hearing test (audiometry), a tympanogram provides valuable information about the condition of the eardrum and middle ear, helping guide accurate diagnosis and treatment.

OAE’s

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) testing measures how well the inner ear (cochlea) is functioning by detecting the response of its tiny sensory hair cells. When sound enters the ear, these cells vibrate and create a faint echo that travels back through the middle ear. A small probe with a built-in microphone placed in the ear canal records this response.

The presence—or absence—of these emissions provides important information about hearing ability and cochlear health. If hearing loss exceeds 25–30 decibels (dB) or if there’s a blockage in the outer or middle ear, these responses may not be present.

This non-invasive, painless test is performed in a quiet setting and requires no response from the patient, making it especially useful for evaluating hearing in infants, young children, or individuals unable to complete standard hearing tests.

What are hearing aids?

Hearing aids are small, sophisticated devices that help individuals with hearing loss hear more clearly by amplifying and refining sound.

Each device contains three main components:

  • Microphone – Captures surrounding sounds.
  • Amplifier – Processes and adjusts the sound for optimal clarity.
  • Speaker (Receiver) – Delivers the enhanced sound directly into the ear.

Today’s digital hearing aids do far more than make sounds louder—they use advanced technology to reduce background noise, enhance speech understanding, and automatically adapt to different listening situations. These devices can be programmed to emphasize specific frequencies, providing a natural and personalized hearing experience that integrates seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Finding the Right Fit

What types of hearing aids are available?

Hearing aids are available in a range of styles and technologies to match individual hearing needs and lifestyle preferences. At SoCal ENT, our audiologists take time to understand your goals, daily routine, and comfort level before recommending the most suitable device. Each option is carefully selected to provide the right balance of performance, discretion, and ease of use for your unique hearing profile.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids

These devices sit discreetly behind the ear, connecting to an earpiece within the ear canal. They're durable and powerful, making them suitable for any level of hearing loss.

Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) Hearing Aids

RIC hearing aids, smaller and more discreet than BTE models, place the speaker directly in the ear canal to provide natural sound quality.

In-the-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aids

Custom-fit for your outer ear, these devices provide an ideal mix of power and subtlety—perfect for mild to moderate hearing loss.

Completely-in-Canal (CIC) & Invisible-in-Canal (IIC) Hearing Aids

These tiny, discreet devices fit snugly inside the ear canal, offering top-notch sound enhancement while remaining almost invisible.

Common Causes and Solutions

What conditions do Hearing Aids address?

Hearing aids are designed to enhance clarity and sound awareness for people with various forms of hearing loss. They can help manage both temporary and permanent conditions that interfere with how sound travels through or is processed by the ear.

  • Age-Related Hearing Loss (Presbycusis) – Gradual loss of hearing sensitivity, often affecting high-pitched sounds first.
  • Noise-Induced Hearing Loss – Damage caused by long-term noise exposure or a single loud event, such as concerts or machinery.
  • Conductive Hearing Loss – Occurs when sound cannot move efficiently through the outer or middle ear due to blockage or structural issues.
  • Sensorineural Hearing Loss – Results from inner ear or auditory nerve damage, affecting how sound signals are interpreted by the brain.
  • Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears) – Many modern hearing aids include built-in sound therapy features to help reduce the perception of tinnitus.

Hearing loss affects more than communication—it can influence cognitive health, emotional well-being, and balance. Early evaluation and professional care are essential for maintaining hearing, confidence, and overall quality of life.
